this week’s color palette: red & metallic silver (inspired by mini cherry pies)

As the summer is ending I think we’re all starting to think about fall recipes and comfort food. This week’s color palette was inspired by these mini cherry pies that you can make in a cupcake pan. Serve one warm mini pie for each of your guests with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and I bet everyone will go home with a smile on their face. Here is the full recipe link.

how to create a soft look to your home

Ever look at a picture like this and wonder why you can’t quite create this soft soothing look to your own home? First it starts with the floors. A dark wood floor would not give you this overall look. By staining your floors a soft gray or even a white you can begin laying in this soft palette. (Minwax has several grays to choose from.) If you don’t want to stain your existing floors another color then choose a large area rug in a soft gray, light pale blue or cream and have it cover most all of your … Read more

selecting colors for kitchen cabinetry & islands, my tips for a cohesive design

I’ve been working for several months now on a custom home for a client.  From the beginning it was decided to keep the kitchen light and bright with white cabinets and a marble countertop. But my suggestion has been to have the large island be a dark gray/blue color (similar to the color pictured above) as a beautiful contrast to the white. The overall house color palette will be soft shades of white, gray and pale blue. So this week we are selecting the color for the island. We also are having a custom wet bar designed and need to … Read more

summer table settings made up of bountiful vegetables (and where those glasses should actually be placed)

This table setting caught my eye. As I noted yesterday golds are still making a showing for tabletop items, from candles to candle sticks to flatware. It’s slowly been folded into the trend market for the past 5 years and it’s still holding tight. But let’s talk about summer vegetables for centerpieces, votives and even salt cellars. How creative this is to use lettuce as individual salt and pepper cellars- and a radish hollowed out for a votive holder. These are clever ideas and using vegetables as your centerpiece in late summer certainly can be elegant and seasonal. Using a … Read more

choosing a bathroom sink for small spaces

When choosing a bathroom vanity if you need storage you might want to consider a vessel sink. A vessel sink, which sits above the counter really only has the pipe underneath to contend with. So instead of losing that top drawer in a vanity, the top drawer can be made to have a ‘notch’ in it (see below) to go around the pipe and still allow you the storage space. This is great for powder rooms, so you have a drawer and possibly 2 doors underneath. This doesn’t have to be custom, some stock vanities already have this like this … Read more

this week’s color palette: sandy neutrals

Creating a color palette for your home can be a bit easier if you choose something you are inspired by… like the sea, sand, a forest, even a farmer’s market. I always like to keep in mind the flow from room to room. As you are sitting in one room you will be looking into the adjacent rooms, so it’s a good idea to consider what colors are next to each other as you travel throughout your home. Pale shades of neutral colors for your walls are always a good investment and you can bring in color or keep within … Read more
