serve up classic mint julep’s for st. patrick’s day – in a mint julep cup of course

Having friends over this weekend for St. Patrick’s Day? Why not serve fresh green mint cocktails like a classic mint julep recipe. I carry a vintage inspired mint julep cup on my shop. My silversmith and I found a julep cup from the 40’s and we had it replicated for my shop. I just love it. It’s a little taller and a little more slender than the readily available julep cups out there. And why not fill extra julep cups with mint as your table or bar decor- they will smell wonderful and your guests can use the mint to … Read more

personalize your table setting with monogram chair covers & matchbooks

To continue with our monogram theme this week I wanted to share with you a table I styled for InStyle magazine. First I had Gail Brill (our weddings contributor this month on the blog!) design a personal monogram for the couple. We then gave the monogram design to Penn & Fletcher in Long Island City to embroider chair covers in a blue that was in our color palette. Now I did these here for a wedding reception, just for the bride and groom, but you can do this idea for your own chairs at home too. We simply … Read more

a new year & new engagements

Happy New Year to everyone! Over the holidays many people get engaged and start the planning process for their wedding or celebration. The above bouquet is one of my favorites from The Best of Martha Stewart Living Weddings book which I had the honor of contributing. This is a wonderful book to buy for yourself or as a gift for the bride to be. It touches on everything from flowers to tents to keeping memories. Which by the way, you might be planning a baptism, an anniversary party, a big birthday party etc. this year and wedding books can … Read more

weddings with matthew robbins: bring a welcoming, friendlier edge to vibrant red by pairing it with light tones & accents

“Red is often a color we all shy away from or we completely embrace. There isn’t much compromise when it comes to this vibrant color. I love red tones but don’t always enjoy going the typical route of pairing red with other jewel tones. A great way to bring a welcoming, friendlier edge to this intense color is to pair it with softer, lighter tones and accents as I did here. Instead of a deep, rich table linen I chose a textured, golden wheat tone. The dinner napkins were also an elegant golden yellow tone and even the votive candles … Read more

weddings & celebrations: cupcakes as favors

Whether you are planning a large wedding or a small holiday party, cupcakes and mini cupcakes are always a welcome sweet! They can be decorated so many different ways. Martha Stewart’s Cupcakes book has 175 ideas for decorating cupcakes, like these monogram cupcakes above (visit coppergifts.com for cupcake cutters and supplies and shopsweetlulu.com for cupcake stands). But you can always visit your favorite local bakery and ask what kind of cupcake designs they offer for weddings or holidays. They usually have a portfolio of designs they can do, or have done for clients, that aren’t always made on a daily … Read more

Lynn’s wedding anniversary (& some photos!)

Today is my wedding anniversary. I thought I’d share with you our wedding photos that appeared in Martha Stewart Weddings and were photographed by Holger Thoss (so many years ago!). Our wedding was in NYC at Christ Church on 60th and Park Avenue at 12:35pm (because it’s good luck to have the second hand on the ‘up-swing’). After the ceremony, together with our guests we were led by  bagpipes up Park Avenue four blocks to the Hotel Plaza Athenee for an afternoon cocktail party with a live jazz band. It was a very small wedding, about 70 people. … Read more

burlap wedding details

We were loving burlap as a tablecloth and runner so much for Thanksgiving, we thought we’d see what kind of burlap items were available for weddings and celebrations. Of course burlap usually lends itself to a casual or rustic style wedding and you don’t want to cover everything in burlap, just select a few details to be used throughout your event. Lynn has several rustic wedding inspiration photos on her Pinterest “weddings” board you might like.  (follow Lynn on Pinterest! Click on the “P” button located on the top right of this page) Many shops on Etsy have burlap banners, … Read more

fern & woodland inspired cake

One of my favorite wedding cakes is this fern and woodland inspired cake that writer and editor, Celia Barbour had at her wedding on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. The cake is made of smooth buttercream-frosted tiers. Buttercream piped ferns, real acorns and oak leaves adorn the layers. Many printing companies can add almost any icon of your choice to tie all your details of your wedding together. Pictured below is an example of a fern invitation from minted.com. You could also use the icon on matchbooks, napkins and programs. Ferns and woodland elements (such as moss, leaves and … Read more
