Last week every flowering tree burst into a profusion of blossoms. Dogwood, cherry, magnolia and lilac are all available locally or from your garden. More great news, peonies have arrived at great prices. The coral charms are a bit more expensive. As far as telling you what to do, c’mon, you know what to do. And if you don’t remember, think of mom or grandma and you will remember. Spring is here. For the more avid gardener, muscari, violets and blue bells are all up and with the cool weather the daffodils and forsythia are still fine. –Michael George … Read more

flowers with michael george: lilac is in the market, it’s spring!
Lilac is spring and it is in the market. Remove the lower lateral spikes from the branches, keeping those with buds. Keep the branch long, leaving a plume at the top- 10 inches or so. Buy at the market until local lilac becomes available. Use tall lilac branches in tall vases and the side pieces that you cut in smaller vases. To add a little more luxury mix a few peonies in with the lilac (shown above). Late spring is here and few warm days will reveal her glory, hurry up! – Michael George. flowers with michael george: forsythia
I noticed over the weekend that the flowering trees were showing their buds. After a few warm days we will be pruning our forsythia and bringing the branches into our home. One or two large scale, 3-5 foot tall and others that will fit. Compliment the yellow forsythia with white or yellow market daffodils or another seasonal bloom in small containers. Keep it natural and simple, relax and enjoy the spring. -Michael George Note from Lynn: I’ve learned a lot from Michael of the years and he always has great tips- which you can find in his book- Simply … Read more
flowers with michael george: spring is in the air, daffodils make a beautiful table setting
Spring is in the air; the bulbs remember. We looked closely this weekend and found hellebores in the garden. Six florets in low crystal bowls, a few naturally colorful eggs, great food and it was a fete complete for Easter! Another idea for a spring table is a crisp white linen tablecloth, pale yellow napkins, white plates and 4″ or 5″ containers filled with yellow daffodils and placed with whimsy around the table. – Michael George For ideas and floral techniques be sure to check out Michael’s beautiful book, “Simply Elegant Flowers with Michael George”.

weddings: a classic wedding reception by Michael George takes cues from the surrounding foliage
Michael George does simplicity so well. His attention to detail and stem finishes and cuts are so precise every arrangement is a piece of art. Here he brought 3 different white flowers together in 3 varying heights and exposed their expertly cut green stems in clear glass vessels to create a visually interesting centerpiece. Though Michael’s perfection in cutting and binding stems is very organized, his event design is so classic, most of his palettes follow natural color combinations and textures so that his events never feel contrived. The varying size and height of the hanging lanterns, combined with … Read more
fresh peonies, michael george’s favorite flower!
It’s that time of year for big, beautiful blooms of peonies. Since I began the week with sugar peonies (by Ron Ben-Israel) I thought it was fitting to feature fresh peonies. These peonies are arranged by Michael George. Michael is known for his monochromatic and mono-genus arrangements with perfectly clean cut stems. And it also seemed fitting to feature his fresh peonies because they are his favorite flower. Michael once said to me, “I think of the peony as the queen of the garden and the rose as the duchess.” (I found it interesting that he had a definite favorite … Read more

this week’s color palette: fall greens and wispy pink
When we think of fall, I think we all lean towards rust colors, browns and golden hues but with summer not officially over for another week or so greens are still so fresh. Michael George Flowers has beautiful greens available this week like these white anemones (with a touch of pink), green hydrangea and ornithogalum. Green spider mums, autumn hydrangea with roses and kale (pictured below) are a few more options for a beautiful fall arrangement. Benjamin Moore paint colors for this palette are from top to bottom: Wispy Pink 2005-70, Handmade Paper CSP-875, Green Thumb CSP-870 and Chimichurri … Read more
weddings: marrying your style to your location- here are our tips for a happy union
Sometimes trying to decide on the decor of a location for a celebration can be very tricky. The obvious is have the decor mirror the design aesthetic of the building but the location might not represent your style 100%. Here is an great example of a modern location but with natural branches as centerpieces- the opposite of what you might expect. By keeping the centerpieces all the same and all the table decor in a neutral color palette the execution is more modern in feel but the organic silhouette of the branches softens the modernity of the space.
