quick change: seasonal pillows & throws

A quick change to your living space can be just switching out your throw pillows and throws seasonally. By changing fabrics and colors from lightweight cottons & linens to brushed wools and velvets in deep jewel tones, your space can turn from summer to fall in a snap. You don’t always have to invest in the entire pillow, just the pillow covers. I use this time to have my pillow covers cleaned and I carefully store them away until the next season. Designer Victoria Hagan always pulls a room together so elegantly. Pictured above is a living room she designed … Read more

yellow & white: rugs, pillows and doors

I used to have my living room painted yellow at our beach house. Although it was always lively and energetic, I did tire of it after a year or so. I now prefer when rooms are more neutral and you can add pops of color seasonally with pillows and flowers. A rug though makes a huge statement in a room and I’ve always loved patterned yellow rugs. This photo and rug are from The Rug Company. I think it’s a great example of how much impact a colorful rug can make in your room and completely change the look … Read more

country inspired wedding details

A sure way to make your wedding celebration (or any party for that matter) memorable is to take the time to infuse some of your interests or background into the event. Even if you are having a black tie reception in the city it doesn’t mean you can’t bring in a few unique details to personalize it, even if it’s a bit of country (or vise versa). We love these Mini Mason Jar Shot Glasses that can also be personalized from HomeWetBar.com, set of 4, $12.95. Directing your guests is always a good idea for any event, whether with … Read more

this week’s color palette: shades of gray and a pop of orange

We’re bombarded with images of orange during the months of October and November but a sophisticated color palette to pair with orange is shades of gray. Using gray as your neutral and limiting the pop of color to your accessories, you can easily change accessories seasonally if you are a bit scared you’ll grow tired of orange.  Gray really goes with most any color- pops of red for the holidays, white or pink for winter, yellow or green for spring. The easiest way to change the look of your room is to change out pillows and throws. A neutral doesn’t … Read more

how to create a soft look to your home

Ever look at a picture like this and wonder why you can’t quite create this soft soothing look to your own home? First it starts with the floors. A dark wood floor would not give you this overall look. By staining your floors a soft gray or even a white you can begin laying in this soft palette. (Minwax has several grays to choose from.) If you don’t want to stain your existing floors another color then choose a large area rug in a soft gray, light pale blue or cream and have it cover most all of your … Read more

this week’s color palette: pastel pinks & golds

This fall’s trend in coats is pastels, like this pink coat from Rochas. Together with gold this is a great color palette for celebrations, weddings and even rooms that you’d like to feel warm. If you aren’t keen on painting your walls pink, pink can come in the way of accessories like pillows and your walls can be a color like Benjamin Moore’s Ivory Tusk. Your main pieces like a sofa, rug or headboard can be in neutrals as well.  I usually like to paint trim white, Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s white to be exact. Gold hardware or lighting really would … Read more

a colorful (high-gloss) painted door can make a big first impression

Designer kelly wearstler has several books that I often reference- Modern Glamour and Hue (available on amazon). I like her mix of colors and textures and her attention to detail. One of my favorite spaces designed by her is the restaurant BG at Bergdorf Goodman.  Above is an example of how she incorporates color through details at a residential home. She starts with basics and builds from there- white walls, a dark floor, select pieces of black furniture, but then layers in coral /peach upholstered stools, accessories, a gorgeous coral painted door- it all comes together effortlessly and her … Read more
