Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday. Some of you will take Mom out to brunch, but those of you that are hosting Mom at home here are a few simple ideas for a casual spring table. A whimsical approach is to set each place setting with a flower cone. (see below for a tip on how to keep the blooms fresh all afternoon) Orange juice fits right in our daffodil color palette, so have chilled champagne on hand for mimosas as your alcoholic beverage. To keep the table fun and casual use mini daffodils on the tops of yellow and white striped straws to make stirrers (pictured below). Most of these components you can pick up at the grocery store and daffodils hopefully are in your garden, but if not, it’s a quick stop at the local flower shop or farmers market. Easy! Now I’m known not to be a great cook, so I will most likely serve quiche and make a nice spring salad for brunch. (My secret is Fresh Direct, they are my go to grocer for ready to cook foods.) Keep scrolling for more simple and quick ideas.
The stem of mini daffodils fits right down into the straw for a sturdy stirrer. Place the flowers on the napkin facing the seated guest. This will be prettier than seeing the point of the cone when seated.
Serve a selection of sorbet in flavors like lemon, tangerine, coconut and pistachio. Place the pints in an ice filled bucket to keep cool and let guests serve themselves. Make sure to have a few scoops on hand and lots of sugar cones.
You could also place flower cones in small vases, then just use simple daffodil blooms at each place setting. Not all the daffodils have to be matching. Using all different varieties adds visual interest. This works because the flowers are all in a nice cohesive color palette of shades of white, yellow and orange.
Fill water tubes, like these pictured below, to keep your blooms fresh all afternoon (the cone will hide the tube). I have linked you to tubes you can buy online but you can find these at any floral supply shop or ask your local florist if you can buy what you need directly from them. If you have never used a water tube before, there is a hole in the top that the stem fits into so it can sit in water.
If you notice you probably have this place setting in your cabinets already- white plates, simple tumblers, flatware and cream (or white) linen napkins, so it truly is easy. Here are the links though for the exact items I used here.
Get this look: White porcelain plates, linen napkins, “knifeforkspoon” flatware, glass tumblers, striped straws, glass cube vases. (Tip: purchase straws in multiple colors to use throughout the year for all types of celebrations, from birthdays to holidays)
If you’d prefer not to use a flower cone, make a small daffodil arrangement for each place setting and lay blooms on each napkin- simple and chic.
