use beeswax as a place card holder for cold winter dinners

A simple, but fantastic idea for place cards is to take a piece of beeswax and roll into an instant holder. Most taper candles come with a small sheet of plain beeswax to help secure the candles in your candlestick holder. We carry taper candles over on the Little Blue Dish Shop, which come with small rectangular beeswax sheets and the best thing is our tapers are all on sale! We have over 16 colors to choose from and they are all made in Kansas City. Use the coupon “freeshipping” at check out to save even more.  If you have … Read more

this week’s color palette: golden yellows & green -perfect for thanksgiving

As the leaves fall and everyone is preparing for Thanksgiving there’s a transition in color palettes going on for the holidays. Most think of rust colors and oranges for October and Halloween. So a great transitional color palette for these weeks leading up to thanksgiving is a golden yellow and green. Fresh greens, herbs, wreaths can all adorn your home for Thanksgiving without looking like Christmas yet. Small punches of yellow or gold, with your glassware, a velvet ribbon tied around napkins etc. can elegantly adorn a November table setting or decor. The gold glasses I carry at the … Read more

inspiration for your holiday table: mckenzie powell’s enchanting florals

Mckenzie Powell, floral and event designer based in Seattle, has such romantic and organically beautiful florals. Mckenzie trained as a graphic designer which clearly has an impact on both her floral and event design. Her blog is charming. It features so many of her elegant celebrations and snippets of her personality and travels. When I asked her what advice she had for creating holiday centerpieces Mckenzie told me, “While I obviously love a lush floral centerpiece, something on the simpler side can still be really lovely. One of my go-to’s is using a collection of small potted plants, a … Read more

weddings: photographer laura billingham captures a pretty pale blue, gray and violet wedding in barnardsville, nj

Renowned wedding photographer, Laura Billingham captured the essence of this pretty blue, lavender and gray wedding in the bride and groom’s details. Above, the bride’s bouquet of cream roses and pale blue delphinium, belladonna done by florist Jardiniere Fine Flowers of Far Hill, New Jersey. It’s important to go over all the details of your flowers before your big day, like how your bouquet will be tied and what type of ribbon will be used. This bride chose a very neat band of cream ribbon secured with pearl pins in lieu of a large cascading bow. All the … Read more

gray and yellow color palette inspiration

Gray rooms, kitchens and even a studio space like we saw Monday have been very popular of late. Adding pops of yellow in accessories and flowers brings the gray to life. Here are a few inspirational rooms and tabletops using a gray and yellow color palette. (Image above from Crate and Barrel)  Notice how even natural materials like a concrete tabletop, the aluminum on the chairs and even gravel can be the gray in your color palette. Soft touches of gray like the painted woven pattern on the celing bring in small amounts of gray and add visual interest. Even … Read more

That little dish could now hold candy or sugar cubes, boxes could hold tea bags.. and so on. Black and white are so classic that the color palette is a great cohesive glue to allow you to combine … Read more

tabletop: whites, creams & metallics

Since summer is upon us, using coral and starfish for a centerpiece seems appropriate and so pretty in a white, cream and metallic color palette. I love using natural objects like the coral vs. flowers sometimes because I can set the table in advance and not have to worry about the centerpiece wilting or dying too early before my guests arrive. This coral piece and starfish I had as accents around my home and I just moved them to the table for a quick and easy centerpiece. Calligraphed place cards and a menu card, always make a table setting elegant … Read more
