behind the seams at talbots: a look at the company’s creative inspiration

I had the privilege to speak with Dru Hilty, Trend Manager at Talbots, for an insiders special peak behind the company’s process of forecasting and selecting colors and styles for each season. Here’s our discussion… LB: Dru, How does a collection actually come together at Talbots? Where do you begin when you start researching for a new season? DH:  A few of us work with the SVP of Design, Chris Jackson, to help create the concepts behind the collections. He leads the team, and ensures our seasonal concepts are both inspirational and support the brand-vision. Diane Basile, our VP … Read more

weddings: down south with seersucker details

A beautifully executed wedding by planner Tara Guerard and photographed by Liz Banfield. Using seersucker tablecloths makes the wedding feel a bit more relaxed under an open sided tent, but the chandelier drums, fabric draped tent and gray carpeted floor let guests know this is a very elegant southern wedding. The subtle seersucker touches carry from the programs through to the reception. Additional printing details like the flower menu card mix things up a bit with the clever calligraphed leaf attached as place cards. Tara worked together with The Lettered Olive for all the printing. shopping red & gray on etsy.com

I’m surprised that when I mention Etsy.com to friends and family, so many of them have never heard of Etsy yet. It’s an amazing site made up of thousands of little online shops selling handmade and vintage items. You just won’t believe how many talented people there are out there when you start searching Etsy! This year I’ve been shopping Etsy for my twins birthday party which is later this summer. So far I’ve found a woman to make fondant cake toppers, a cupcake supply store for bags and straws, vintage metal animal cookie cutters and custom stamps. (I’ll … Read more

park avenue perfection: whites, creams and metallics

Architect David Mann renovated this gorgeous apartment for Darcy Miller Nussbaum (Editorial Director for Martha Stewart Weddings) and her husband Andy and their three daughters. It was featured in Architectural Digest, photos by Nikolas Koenig. Darcy and Andy had used David Mann to design their previous apartment which I had the pleasure to see in person when I worked for Darcy at Martha Stewart Weddings.  It had a very similar color palette, but the details in this apartment are even more amazing! I love the use of the metallics in the chandeliers, tile, table bases etc.. I wanted … Read more

weddings: white, cream & gold candlelight aisle

Sometimes simplicity is best. Michael George always has the most beautifully tailored floral arrangements and here the calla lilies that are sleek and tailored work so well with the ornate setting with moldings and chandelier. Most people have been shying away from gold ballroom chairs, but like I have been talking about this week, gold and silver metallics are coming back into the fold again. I wanted to show a beautiful example of a classic gold ballroom chair being used – but yet it still feels fresh and current especially with the use of the straight sided hurricanes in different … Read more

tabletop: whites, creams & metallics

Since summer is upon us, using coral and starfish for a centerpiece seems appropriate and so pretty in a white, cream and metallic color palette. I love using natural objects like the coral vs. flowers sometimes because I can set the table in advance and not have to worry about the centerpiece wilting or dying too early before my guests arrive. This coral piece and starfish I had as accents around my home and I just moved them to the table for a quick and easy centerpiece. Calligraphed place cards and a menu card, always make a table setting elegant … Read more
