Meet Kaminer Haislip: My Interview with the Extraordinary Silversmith from Charleston

If you haven’t realized from my shop or my posts, I’m a bit obsessed with tabletop and design. So I was so thrilled and elated when I discovered Kaminer Haislip’s designs for the first time. I just love her coffee and tea services that combine wood and silver… as well as most everything else she designs! And of course wouldn’t you know it, she’s as gracious as she is talented. Kaminer recently granted me an interview and I wanted to share it with you today as well as show you a sampling of her work. She shares a lot of … Read more

chocolate obsessed? meet Charley and Jessica Wheelock, the husband and wife team behind Woodblock Chocolate Manufactory

Portand, Oregon’s Woodblock Chocolate Manufactory is the creation of  husband and wife team, Charley and Jessica Wheelock. Jessica and I met while working together at Martha Stewart. So many creative people have worked or work at MSLO and Jessica is certainly one of them! They wanted to start a sustainable business so they decided on manufacturing chocolate. Charley, who has a background in industrial design, took classes, they both read books, researched beans and processes. They started the business in their home kitchen; they experimented and tweaked their chocolate process much like a wine maker would. Becoming experts in their … Read more

tabletop: 2 ways to liven up your place setting

One wooden button, used two different ways. I found these simple wood buttons at Michael’s and painted them red (this took less than 15 minutes using “craft smart” metallic paint in red). The first idea is a classic red and white place setting using white round plates, red linen napkins and red grosgrain ribbon tied through the button holes to make 2 bows. The second idea uses favor boxes at each place setting. Each box is wrapped in wrapping paper, and the button is bound on top of the box with two pieces of burgundy velvet ribbon. I … Read more

Lynn’s wedding anniversary (& some photos!)

Today is my wedding anniversary. I thought I’d share with you our wedding photos that appeared in Martha Stewart Weddings and were photographed by Holger Thoss (so many years ago!). Our wedding was in NYC at Christ Church on 60th and Park Avenue at 12:35pm (because it’s good luck to have the second hand on the ‘up-swing’). After the ceremony, together with our guests we were led by  bagpipes up Park Avenue four blocks to the Hotel Plaza Athenee for an afternoon cocktail party with a live jazz band. It was a very small wedding, about 70 people. … Read more

Sometimes you can take a color palette literally… and this is one of them. Honey and bees can make a great thread for a celebration. Whether it’s a wedding shower or a simple cocktail party for friends, there are so many recipes you can make with honey and a lot of packaged items for favors. Honey recipes can range from breakfast foods to drinks to sauces for appetizers, so your honey themed celebration could be any time of day. Here are a few of my honey and bee picks:  Mrs. John L. Strong’s “bee crawling” note card set (great … Read more

tuesday’s tabletop: carrot & stick press

Carrot & Stick Press has been one of my favorite press companies. You might remember we featured their lobster placemats over the 4th of July. They have wonderful printed cards, placemats, place cards, notebooks, folded cards, etc. that are perfect for entertaining or setting a table. Here I pulled their striped paper placemats in red and aqua stripe and a very festive Hawaiian floral print. Pair these with your everyday white china and it will bring your table to life. I also pulled a few of their notebooks as well. These are perfect place cards and favors in one. … Read more

tuesday’s table talk: set your table with striped favor bags and send your friends home smiling

Fill these party bags with candy and goodies and place at each place setting. It’s easy and will make your guests smile! These yellow and white stripe party bags from Paper Eskimo (www.papereskimo.com) are only $9.95 for 12. Add a simple ribbon or twine to close the top or simply stand them upright. I filled these last weekend for my guests with vanilla salt water taffy (because the taffy is all white). I usually order taffy or other candy from www.candywarehouse.com. I keep a sampling of different colored bags, tags and ribbon on hand so it’s easy to … Read more

weddings & celebrations: sea salt caramels make a great favor

How great is this logo and simple packaging from Sea + Cane Sweets? But better yet is how good these sweets are. I ordered some sea salt caramels from them and WOW! -amazing. I bought their sea salt caramel trio- dark chocolate, classic and yes…..cabernet sauvignon!  I love, love, love sea salt with sweets. I add sea salt to my s’mores! These caramels would make wonderful favors at your wedding or party or as a great housewarming gift. Other interesting products they offer…. their ‘chocolate salami’ that you see in the picture hanging from string and ‘hot chocolate spoons’. This … Read more
