10 kitchen design tips for a classic kitchen

When designing a kitchen it can be quite overwhelming, I know. There are a lot of choices to consider. Here are a few quick tips to consider if you’d like that classic look to your a kitchen. 1. When in doubt, use a white subway tile backsplash, it is a classic choice and goes with most any cabinet style. 2. If you would like to have color in your kitchen cabinets, but you are not sure how to infuse it, keep the color on your lower cabinets (like you see above) and select white upper cabinets. This keeps the kitchen … Read more

a last look at the famed chelsea hotel

If you have lived in New York City I’m sure you have your own story about times in the hotel- once a place where artists, writers and musicians took up apartments. But now it’s being renovated into luxury apartments. It’s not as well known for it’s design or interiors but for who lived there, the parties that happened, the conversations and yes, some deaths. Vanity Fair takes a look at some residents and their apartments. I thought it was worth sharing the link today. See the slideshow and interesting commentary here. For more stories about the hotel there is … Read more

this week’s color palette: shades of gray and a pop of orange

We’re bombarded with images of orange during the months of October and November but a sophisticated color palette to pair with orange is shades of gray. The easiest way to change the look of your room is to change out pillows and throws. A neutral doesn’t … Read more

create a neutral color palette with gray & green

When people think of neutrals most automatically think of tans and creams, but gray and green can be a nice alternative. Whether it’s light or dark gray, both shades are still very neutral. Green solids or patterned fabrics add dimension and texture like this upholstered headboard in Elizabeth Mayhew’s bedroom above or these solid green drapes in a dining room pictured below. Blending in cream or white balance the overall palette. This is an easy palette to work with in kitchens too since many appliances, finishes and flooring are all in the gray family.  And don’t forget your front door. … Read more

kitchen pendants- where to start your search

Selecting lighting for your kitchen island can be overwhelming, I know. I’ve been debating what kitchen island pendants to select for a kitchen project I’m working on right now. Industrial? Traditional? Vintage schoolhouse? Chandelier? A drum Pendant? The choices seem endless. I’m working on a farmhouse that’s a mix of vintage and modern, so I’m going back and forth between a drum shade or white and polished nickel industrial pendants (since all our faucets and hardware are polished nickel). I’ll make sure to share the outcome with you in the coming weeks. But for now I wanted to share with … Read more

it’s not wallpaper, it’s a stencil!

I think sometimes we’re all just a bit timid about making a commitment to wallpaper, right? I even only have wallpaper in my powder room. So when I came across this company called NotWallpaper I’m excited to be able to try it. They are stencil rollers to make painting the pattern very easy. This is a great DIY option. A focus wall could be fun with one of these patterns. Or you could even paint the pattern on a large canvas and frame for a unique piece of art. Try blik or New York Central Art Supply for art … Read more

Ever look at a picture like this and wonder why you can’t quite create this soft soothing look to your own home? First it starts with the floors.
