a wedding color palette of reds and neutrals (and a perfect palette for the upcoming holidays too)

This week’s color palette of reds and neutrals is beautiful for a wedding. There are  so many red flowers to choose from and foliage and berries to weave into bouquets and centerpieces. We pulled inspiration for you to get you started. And don’t forget wedding magazines and books are sometimes the best place to start to get ideas for your fall parties or holiday celebration decor. We love the books by Tara Guerard, Michael George, Matthew Robbins and Martha Stewart. Bouquet Image above via Taylored Events. create a living fall centerpiece from your local garden center

Instead of using cut flowers as a centerpiece it’s always fun to use seasonal flowers and foliage and plant in a bowl or antique vessel which should last 2-3 weeks at least when kept in a cool environment. (Placing them on an outside table when not in use is best.)  There are so many pretty, deep colors this time of year. The cabbages and lettuces are particularly beautiful. Above we pulled red lettuce, blue pansies and pink oxalis (otherwise known to some as false shamrocks or pink sorrels) in keeping with this week’s color palette. Ornamental peppers are also abundant … Read more

pumpkin vases (in a pale palette)

It’s easy to have your pumpkins become your table centerpiece. Hollow out the pumpkin like you usually would and leave the top lid with stem off. Use any container or vase which is just a bit lower than the top of the pumpkin so you don’t see it, place inside the pumpkin and arrange your flowers. It’s best to have some foliage or cascading greens to cover up most of your cut top, this will make it look more clean and finished looking.  Fall hydrangea, mums and ferns could also work well in an arrangement. We also loved this gray … Read more

this week’s color palette: a fall harvest palette

The leaves are starting to change here in New York and pumpkin fields are full. This time of year I love bringing out my Black Clay Pottery, black tumblers, flatware and decorative owls. Also setting the table with Terra Cotta Hurricanes and votives on our outside patio brings that garden feeling to the tabletop and act as a centerpiece.  I like selecting muted color pumpkins for the table instead of the bright orange (which I usually save for pumpkin carving). Natural color linen table runners keep the table soft against the dark plates … Read more

the milk pail’s hot spiced cider recipe, yum!

I took a rare morning off today and I went on a field trip with my daughters. We went apple picking at the Milk Pail in Watermill, NY. It’s a 13th generation family run farm by the Halsey family. Nestled near Mecox Bay and the ocean it’s a beautiful farm complete with a stand in the middle of the fields complete with coffee, cider, donuts, fruit and more. I thought I’d share their Hot Spiced Cider recipe they gave us this morning. Can’t wait to try it out! – Lynn Butler Beling The Milk Pail’s Hot Spiced Cider (serves 8) … Read more

this week’s color palette: muted fruits & foliage colors for casual outdoor entertaining

It’s officially fall. But while it’s still warm why not continue to entertain friends and family outside. Creating a casual afternoon of cocktails and bite sized food doesn’t have to be as daunting as you might think. I’ll be sharing my tips all week for casual entertaining so I hope you’ll follow along today through Friday. Pictured above is this week’s color palette which I introduce each Monday and my paint chip picks from Benjamin Moore.  Colors chips from top to bottom: Pearly Gates 190, Pearl Harbor 2165-50, Golden Gate 033, Palace Pear cw-650 and Sweet Pear 389.  It’s a … Read more

simple thanksgiving decor -burlap & votives

A lot of people stress out about setting a table for Thanksgiving and I get a lot of questions about how to set a unique table without breaking the bank. BURLAP. I love taking burlap from the local garden supply store (about $1 per yard) and using it as a textural and inexpensive tablecloth. It’s simple and unexpected, but it will be welcomed by friends and family as a refreshing change from the usual cloth. My ‘stylist’ secret to making a burlap cloth work is to mix in high and low tableware. Here I’ve mixed in simple wood salt … Read more

color palette: deep greens and yellow for fall

I’ve been inspired lately by the deep deep forest greens with a pop of yellow for fall. I’m loving bright yellow for accessories and skirts combined with dark green basics. Tory Burch has a lot of deep green in her collection for fall. I like the Cecily Dress, $395, from toryburch.com, it’s a great basic. Also pictured is an iPad clutch- but I just love it as a basic clutch- the Valextra Isis IPad Clutch, $1,310, from Barneys. (I’m going to try to start wearing a deep color like this green for fall instead of resorting to black all the … Read more
