color palette: black, white with metallics

The other week we were talking about emerging color trends and I said I was excited to see what color dominated the award shows. Well, the emerald green that Pantone selected really wasn’t anywhere to be seen- that was on the red carpet a few years back. Black and white clearly dominated the red carpet with accents of gold and silver in accessories and small box clutches. Red, coral, plum, navy and light blue also made a few appearances but not like black and white. Dresses were either a combination of black and white like Julianne Moore’s Tom Ford dress, … Read more

6 emerging trends in kitchen design

Most of the past decade has been filled with images of minimal kitchens with sleek white cabinets, granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances, but over the past several years new trends are slowly emerging into the market of kitchen design. Phrases like “having a soul”, “radiating warmth”, “textural”, “decorative diversity”, and “casual and lived in” may give you a preview of what’s on the horizon.  Here are six emerging trends I’ve pulled out for you. 1. Personalization. Consumers seem to finally want to add a bit of their own personality into their kitchen design and forgo the cookie cutter … Read more

wallpaper without the commitment

I’ve been wanting to wallpaper a focus wall behind the bed in a guest room but I haven’t been able to commit to a pattern. Temporary wallpaper, that is similar to a wall decal, could be just the answer since I’m not 100% sure. Tempaper, self adhesive, repositionable, temporary wallpaper has several designs to choose from. I selected a few in this week’s color palette, but they have many colors available. I think I’m leaning toward the Peonies in Gold Leaf, pictured top left. Continuing clockwise the patterns are Skotti in blush, Edie in Champagne and Zee in Honey Wheat. … Read more

color palette: pink, blush, stone, metallics

As we end 2012 and go forward with a brand new year, this palette of pink, blush, stones colors and metallics seems fresh and clean. I talked about emerald green as Pantone’s 2013 color of the year, but then Benjamin Moore has a soft yellow called Lemon Sorbet as color of the year that they are mixing with mint, coral, pink, blue and vanilla neutrals. I’m anxious to watch the award shows in January and February to see what colors will trend in the girls’ gowns. I think it sometimes predicts the mood of the year in both fashion and … Read more

interiors: statement pieces & painted accents in honey gold

Upholstered chairs or sofas in a honey gold fabric (especially a cotton velvet) is a gorgeous way to bring in this color palette to your living spaces. This sofa pictured at Hostler Burrows is a great example. (Hostler Burrows is in the process of moving to their new location at 51 E. 10th Street in New York City. But you can find their collection of mostly twentieth century Scandinavian design pieces on 1stdibs.com.) “Bee” color paint, from Sherwin-Williams is another way to bring this color into your space- perfect for moldings, doors or for painting furniture …like say a … Read more

honey themed celebrations…bee creative

Sometimes you can take a color palette literally… and this is one of them. Honey and bees can make a great thread for a celebration. Whether it’s a wedding shower or a simple cocktail party for friends, there are so many recipes you can make with honey and a lot of packaged items for favors. Honey recipes can range from breakfast foods to drinks to sauces for appetizers, so your honey themed celebration could be any time of day. Here are a few of my honey and bee picks:  Mrs. John L. Strong’s “bee crawling” note card set (great … Read more

this week’s color palette: honey golds

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend. This week’s color palette is honey golds, perfect for that change in seasons that seems to occur exactly over Labor Day here on the East Coast. The air gets a little crisper and the leaves will soon start to turn yellows and golds. Honey golds vs. bright yellows seem a bit more sophisticated, romantic and warm to me. Although a primary yellow is associated with happiness and energy (and great for a statement piece), the honey golds are more subtle and calming. Paired with a cool blue, it’s one of my … Read more
