I hope everyone had a great holiday yesterday. This week I wanted to do blues and grays- a color palette I worked with for my own beach house. I installed gray hardwood floors, white moldings and used all shades of blues for the walls. I even had a few pieces of my pine furniture painted pale shades of blue to lighten the rooms. I’ll show you the furniture examples later this week. For today though, nature seemed to be the best inspiration for this color palette.

the st. regis hotel inspires us to decorate with “tiffany blue”
Last year the Tiffany Suite at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City was redesigned. It’s a 1,700 square foot suite on the 14th floor overlooking Fifth Avenue and Central Park. The St. Regis was originally built in 1904 by John Jacob Astor and both the St. Regis and the Tiffany & Co. buildings are landmark buildings on Fifth Avenue. The suite has jewel inspired references and uses the ‘Tiffany Blue’ color as an accent color throughout. Above is a photo of the dining room and the team at Benjamin Moore especially selected these three colors for … Read more
weddings: a tiffany inspired table setting
Event designer and florist, Michael George and I worked on this story for InStyle. Inspired by Tiffany Blue, we used the color in small details and accents throughout vs. draping everything in blue. We selected white flowers, cloths, chairs, china etc. as our backdrop for the blue to pop. Using different sized vases in blues and whites from Middle Kingdom we placed them running down the center of long rectangular tables keeping them low so guests can see each other. Notice to add interest to the centerpieces we used all different types of white flowers- but did not mix … Read more
tiffany & co. books…great gifts!
In my search for the Tiffany & Co. Table Settings Book I came across many interesting books, from celebrated fashion editor Grace Mirabella to design books on Tiffany Style to Tiffany flatware and silver. But the one that I actually ordered and I’m excited to read is Marjorie Hart’s memoir of working at Tiffany’s one summer in the 1940’s. (see review below) Any of these would make great gifts for the upcoming holiday season! I start shopping for Christmas gifts in September so I’m not rushing around at the last minute. These are all available on Amazon. There is … Read more

Did you know that in 1845 Tiffany & Co. was the first in the U.S. to send a mail-order catalogue in full color? It was called the “Tiffany Blue Book” (pictured above). It’s said that soon after the company was founded they adopted the blue color that is now associated with Tiffany & Co. for all their bags, catalogues and boxes and it became part of their branding.

interiors: purple haze
Designer David Kaihoi’s apartment which was featured in House Beautiful has creative ideas for small spaces. Here you can see using color can still be done in a small space. He used Benjamin Moore‘s “Purple Haze” on the walls and for the floor he painted a pattern to look like a rug with “Hale Navy”. His deep color corner banquette also makes the most use of his small space, and he had storage built-in underneath. To see more of the apartment click here for the slideshow.
