quick change: seasonal pillows & throws

A quick change to your living space can be just switching out your throw pillows and throws seasonally. By changing fabrics and colors from lightweight cottons & linens to brushed wools and velvets in deep jewel tones, your space can turn from summer to fall in a snap. You don’t always have to invest in the entire pillow, just the pillow covers. I use this time to have my pillow covers cleaned and I carefully store them away until the next season. Designer Victoria Hagan always pulls a room together so elegantly. Pictured above is a living room she designed … Read more

floral inspiration: carolyne roehm’s books

When looking for floral inspriation for your wedding, an anniversary party, birthday party, holiday celebration- or even by season, Carolyne Roehm’s books are sure to inspire you. She’s coming out with a brand new book on November 6th- entitled “Flowers”. You can pre-order this book or any of her collection of books on Amazon.com. These beautiful arrangements with mums are from her book “A Passion for Flowers”. She uses baskets a lot as vases. What I would do is simply put your floral arrangement in a vase or jar that is just slightly shorter than your basket height … Read more

color palette: deep greens and yellow for fall

I’ve been inspired lately by the deep deep forest greens with a pop of yellow for fall. I’m loving bright yellow for accessories and skirts combined with dark green basics. Tory Burch has a lot of deep green in her collection for fall. I like the Cecily Dress, $395, from toryburch.com, it’s a great basic. Also pictured is an iPad clutch- but I just love it as a basic clutch- the Valextra Isis IPad Clutch, $1,310, from Barneys. (I’m going to try to start wearing a deep color like this green for fall instead of resorting to black all the … Read more

weddings & celebrations: finding the perfect ribbon

When you are searching for ribbon- whether it’s for your wedding bouquet, favors or holiday wreaths… one of my styling sources is Masterstroke Canada for ribbons. Owner, Steven Fraser, is an expert in the field and has a very extensive collection. From satin to grosgrain to velvet, you can find most any color, width or novelty ribbon you can imagine. If you don’t see it on their online store, then I’m sure they can help you find what you are looking for. I highly recommend them as the ‘go to’ source for ribbon.

field trip: my favorite farmer’s markets in the hamptons

Since eggplants and fresh vegetables are in full season here in New York, I thought I’d share my two favorite farmer’s markets in the Hamptons with you. The first market is Halsey Farm Stand on Deerfield Road by the Head of Pond intersection in Water Mill. They have a huge selection of vegetables in unusual varieties, fresh corn that’s still warm from being just picked in the fields, fresh flowers, cheeses, honey, jam…and chocolate mouse pies from Gurneys in the fridge! There’s plenty of parking and they take credit cards. The second is Round Swamp Farm in East Hampton. … Read more

this week’s color palette: eggplant shades

This eggplant still life was photographed by Sang An and styled by me for Oprah Magazine. It’s one of my favorite shots we did together. The colors are so rich and natural. I know all the stores are pushing fall right now- (too early for me! summer isn’t over yet!) but here in the height of summer vegetables we find these gorgeous shades in eggplants. So even though I think most of us associate these colors with fall, they are found during summer in nature. They are so deep and saturated and beautiful. I love it. I would love to … Read more

shopping for succulent wreaths and succulent vertical wall planters

I am most definitely going to order a succulent wreath this year for the holidays and here is a company that is taking pre-orders for November delivery- Cactus Jungle Nursery. They have 10″ wreaths for $44 and 15″ for $132. I’ve also been so interested in creating a vertical wall succulent planter. Sunset magazine has a great little article on how to do it yourself or where to buy a pre-assembled succulent garden (at sgplants.com, note they also have succulent wreaths and kits). If you just need the frame and want to plant it yourself, try searching … Read more

Succulent inspired paint colors

Here are some suggested paint colors from Benjamin Moore pulled from our inspirational succulent color palette this week. Deep Teals look fantastic in dining rooms and studies. Faded green-grays you find in succulents are wonderful for kitchen cabinet colors, living spaces that have a lot of sunlight or restful bedrooms. Blue-greens also work well in living spaces, bedrooms and especially baths.
