weddings with liz banfield: a bride and groom embrace valentine’s weekend with red, pink… and a lot of fun in San Francisco!

When Diego and Suzanne decided to be married on Valentine’s weekend, they wholeheartedly embraced the holiday with style and also a little wink to the kitch that often goes with it. First they enlisted Isabella Sikaffy of Florabella Weddings to design the event. She made a plan to transform the Menlo Circus Club, from the elaborate red-on-red dining room all the way down to carpeting the floor of the cocktail space shocking pink. Guests couldn’t help but smile at all the little details, including candy-heart inspired table names (like “U R Hot” and “Soul Mate”) calligraphed onto heart … Read more

tabletop: scalamandre teams with lenox to bring their iconic patterns to the table

Scalamandre textile house is collaborating with manufacturer, Lenox, to bring five of their fabric & wallpaper patterns to the table. Bloomingdale’s just debuted the collection. Among the five patterns is the iconic Zebras that was originally a wallpaper that adorned the walls of the legendary New York City restaurant, Gino’s. Gino’s has since closed but Scalamadre has resurrected the wallpaper in it’s line and now in a china pattern. The Bouvier pattern (picutred directly below) was also originally a wallpaper that was in the private home of Averell and Marie Harriman. Jacqueline Kennedy stayed with the Harriman’s in Washington after her … Read more

this week’s color palette: reds & pinks

Since Valentine’s Day is coming up fast, I thought we’d talk about reds and pinks this week. These silk flowers in the photo are actually pins from Dulken and Derrick. They are great to wear on a lapel to add a bit of color. For interiors, even though I pulled out these Benjamin Moore paint colors- it doesn’t mean you have to paint your walls these colors. I personally like reds and pinks in splashes of color in accessories.  The softer pinks are wonderful for walls, but the bold colors can be great to paint end tables, chairs etc. to … Read more

beauty: dr.’s remedy enriched nail polish, free of the big 3 toxins

Recently I’ve been going to podiatrist, Dr. Langone and she recommends Dr.’s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish which is free of the three big toxins: formaldehyde, toluene and DBP. This nail polish is also enriched with tree oil and garlic bulb extract which are naturally occurring anti-fungal and antibacterial. This a a local New York company based in Brooklyn, founded by Dr. William Spielfolgel and Dr. Cirlincione. When Dr. Cirlincione’s wife was pregnant they began researching what was contained in most nail polishes and found many harmful toxins. So he partnered with Dr. Spielgolgel and they created Dr.’s Remedy. I would … Read more

wallpaper without the commitment

I’ve been wanting to wallpaper a focus wall behind the bed in a guest room but I haven’t been able to commit to a pattern. Temporary wallpaper, that is similar to a wall decal, could be just the answer since I’m not 100% sure. Tempaper, self adhesive, repositionable, temporary wallpaper has several designs to choose from. I selected a few in this week’s color palette, but they have many colors available. I think I’m leaning toward the Peonies in Gold Leaf, pictured top left. Continuing clockwise the patterns are Skotti in blush, Edie in Champagne and Zee in Honey Wheat. … Read more

weddings with expert liz banfield: forgo the custom of matching bridesmaid dresses

One of the freshest trends happening right now is to forgo the custom of matching bridesmaid dresses. This bride knew that her stylish friends could be trusted with picking out their own wedding day attire but still wanted her bridal party to project a cohesive look. Event designer Isabella Sikaffy of Florabella supplied the ladies with a swatch book of blush, ivory, and warm light gray tones that they could take with them to the store to make sure their gown would fit the color scheme and also allowed them express their individuality. What a great friend – no … Read more

a new year & new engagements

Happy New Year to everyone! Over the holidays many people get engaged and start the planning process for their wedding or celebration. The above bouquet is one of my favorites from The Best of Martha Stewart Living Weddings book which I had the honor of contributing. This is a wonderful book to buy for yourself or as a gift for the bride to be. It touches on everything from flowers to tents to keeping memories. Which by the way, you might be planning a baptism, an anniversary party, a big birthday party etc. this year and wedding books can … Read more

color palette: pink, blush, stone, metallics

As we end 2012 and go forward with a brand new year, this palette of pink, blush, stones colors and metallics seems fresh and clean. I talked about emerald green as Pantone’s 2013 color of the year, but then Benjamin Moore has a soft yellow called Lemon Sorbet as color of the year that they are mixing with mint, coral, pink, blue and vanilla neutrals. I’m anxious to watch the award shows in January and February to see what colors will trend in the girls’ gowns. I think it sometimes predicts the mood of the year in both fashion and … Read more
