a colorful (high-gloss) painted door can make a big first impression

Designer kelly wearstler has several books that I often reference- Modern Glamour and Hue (available on amazon). I like her mix of colors and textures and her attention to detail. One of my favorite spaces designed by her is the restaurant BG at Bergdorf Goodman.  Above is an example of how she incorporates color through details at a residential home. She starts with basics and builds from there- white walls, a dark floor, select pieces of black furniture, but then layers in coral /peach upholstered stools, accessories, a gorgeous coral painted door- it all comes together effortlessly and her … Read more

weddings: anemone cakes by elisa strauss of confetti cakes

(photographed by Monica Buck) I have collaborated and styled so many wedding cakes over the years and one of my favorites is a cluster of 3 little floral cakes I designed with the very talented Elisa of Confetti Cakes for InStyle Weddings. I had a craftsman make 3 black cake stands, varying in height. I was inspired by a vase and we worked from a snapshot I had taken of it. Usually you wouldn’t think of black cake stands for a wedding, but I think the light colored cakes and the anemone flowers with black centers keep it classic in style … Read more

let’s go back to the beginning… color palette: black, peach, pale pink

This was my first post back on April 9th, 2012 and since it was, there weren’t too many readers. It’s one of my favorite color combinations though, so I thought I’d re-post it for those of you who have now joined my blog. Thank you for your weekly support and I hope you keep coming back!  – Lynn Butler Beling I love this color palette. I keep coming back to this color combination because I think it’s both masculine and feminine. Chanel included this palette in their spring 2012 runway show. (see below) The flower in the photograph above is … Read more

weddings: photographer laura billingham captures a pretty pale blue, gray and violet wedding in barnardsville, nj

Renowned wedding photographer, Laura Billingham captured the essence of this pretty blue, lavender and gray wedding in the bride and groom’s details. Above, the bride’s bouquet of cream roses and pale blue delphinium, belladonna done by florist Jardiniere Fine Flowers of Far Hill, New Jersey. It’s important to go over all the details of your flowers before your big day, like how your bouquet will be tied and what type of ribbon will be used. This bride chose a very neat band of cream ribbon secured with pearl pins in lieu of a large cascading bow. All the … Read more

an elegant southern wedding: kaminer haislip to matthew quinn, charleston, south carolina

A few months ago I introduced you to silversmith Kaminer Haislip. (read the full post here) She designs the most beautiful pieces so it’s no surprise that her wedding was elegant and sophisticated too. Kaminer and her husband, Matthew were married in the month of September in Charleston, South Carolina, so a color palette of gray, orange, creamy whites and blues was just perfect. (see our color palette this week that we introduced on Monday for your color guide) They were married at First Scots Presbyterian Church and held their reception at the William Aiken HouseRead more

this week’s color palette: spring pinks with bright yellow, gray and green

The roses are in bloom now as well as the cosmos and geraniums, each one with their own shade of pink…the geranium being a bit more coral in color. The bright yellow, the greens of the stems and leaves and the gray background all can act as pops of accent color or in the case of the gray, a grounding color for floors or your furniture palette. I have maple floors in my own home that are pre-stained a gray, so it is possible to have a gray floor apart from the obvious rugs. Benjamin Moore paint colors guide … Read more

mother’s day: simple settings and pleasures

Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday. Some of you will take Mom out to brunch, but those of you that are hosting Mom at home here are a few simple ideas for a casual spring table.  A whimsical approach is to set each place setting with a flower cone. (see below for a tip on how to keep the blooms fresh all afternoon) Orange juice fits right in our daffodil color palette, so have chilled champagne on hand for mimosas as your alcoholic beverage. To keep the table fun and casual use mini daffodils on the tops of yellow and … Read more

color palette: daffodil yellows & stem greens

The daffodils have been blooming here in New York for the past week or so. I brought these in from my garden and laid them on my counter… and this beautiful still- life was begging to be snapped. I love when this happens, it so rarely does, especially on photo shoots- where you lay something down and just the natural way that you put it down is stunning; You don’t want to touch it- you just want to capture the image with a photograph. I wish I was a better photographer but that’s something I’ll have to learn from some … Read more
