weddings with matthew robbins: bring a welcoming, friendlier edge to vibrant red by pairing it with light tones & accents

“Red is often a color we all shy away from or we completely embrace. There isn’t much compromise when it comes to this vibrant color. I love red tones but don’t always enjoy going the typical route of pairing red with other jewel tones. A great way to bring a welcoming, friendlier edge to this intense color is to pair it with softer, lighter tones and accents as I did here. Instead of a deep, rich table linen I chose a textured, golden wheat tone. The dinner napkins were also an elegant golden yellow tone and even the votive candles … Read more

this week’s color palette: red and white (today I’m sharing my ribbon sources with you)

Red and white is a classic choice for Holiday decorating this time of year. To put a little twist on your red and white palette, try the accent colors I’m suggesting. Pair red and white with one of the accent colors or all of them. Try adding in pink, coral, burgundy and/or brown. Add these accent colors in floral arrangements, gift wrapping, wreaths, candles, glasses, pillows, throws and of course ribbon. Here are some of my stylist sources for beautiful ribbons: Masterstroke CanadaHyman Hendler, M&J Trimming, The Container Store, Etsy, Bell’occhio, Cream City Ribbon and … Read more

simple thanksgiving decor -burlap & votives

A lot of people stress out about setting a table for Thanksgiving and I get a lot of questions about how to set a unique table without breaking the bank. BURLAP. I love taking burlap from the local garden supply store (about $1 per yard) and using it as a textural and inexpensive tablecloth. It’s simple and unexpected, but it will be welcomed by friends and family as a refreshing change from the usual cloth. My ‘stylist’ secret to making a burlap cloth work is to mix in high and low tableware. Here I’ve mixed in simple wood salt … Read more

weddings: white, cream & gold candlelight aisle

Sometimes simplicity is best. Michael George always has the most beautifully tailored floral arrangements and here the calla lilies that are sleek and tailored work so well with the ornate setting with moldings and chandelier. Most people have been shying away from gold ballroom chairs, but like I have been talking about this week, gold and silver metallics are coming back into the fold again. I wanted to show a beautiful example of a classic gold ballroom chair being used – but yet it still feels fresh and current especially with the use of the straight sided hurricanes in different … Read more

tabletop: whites, creams & metallics

Since summer is upon us, using coral and starfish for a centerpiece seems appropriate and so pretty in a white, cream and metallic color palette. I love using natural objects like the coral vs. flowers sometimes because I can set the table in advance and not have to worry about the centerpiece wilting or dying too early before my guests arrive. This coral piece and starfish I had as accents around my home and I just moved them to the table for a quick and easy centerpiece. Calligraphed place cards and a menu card, always make a table setting elegant … Read more

Celebrated caterer Peter Callahan shares one of his favorite specialty drinks with me- his cranberry-tini

“Cranberry-tinis are one of my favorite specialty drinks, their color palette is striking which is an important component of a drink, and the flavor from fresh squeezed cranberries is crisp original and refreshing. Cranberry-tinis combine the two most important ingredients in a drink, color palette and flavor. Their palette of crimson red is a powerful color and the flavor is bold and universal.” says Peter Callahan. You can find the recipe to this drink in Peter’s recently published book, “Bite By Bite”. Peter’s “Peter Callahan Catering” is renowned for his miniature savory and dessert hors d’oeuvres. He’s done several parties … Read more
